Chalcones are important organic compounds belonging to the flavonoid family and contain an a, ẞ- unsaturated carbonyl system hence they are known for their various biological activities such as antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. Therefore, the synthesis of chalcone is important in medicinal and organic chemistry research. In the present study, chalcones were synthesized by the Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction between an aromatic aldehyde and aromatic ketone, the formation of chalcone occurs through nucleophilic addition followed by dehydration and the reaction was carried out under alkaline conditions with continuous stirring at room temperature. The product obtained was a yellow crystalline solid, which was purified by column chromatography and recrystallization method. Further the synthesised compounds were confirmed by spectral analysis and melting point by open capillary method.
