Electrochemical Interfaces: Fundamentals and Applications in Energy Conversion and Storage

S Sampath

Electrochemistry has been receiving a resurgent interest, particularly towards sustainability, energy conversion and storage. Considerable attention has been given to develop materials for electrochemical devices. In terms of fundamentals, one needs to understand the interfacial properties involving electrodes and electrolytes. This includes modified surfaces and electrodes involving materials as well as molecular assemblies. In this direction, our group’s interests include in situ electrochemistry at water-air interface under surface pressure, polymers and layered materials as electrodes to drive redox reactions relevant to rechargeable batteries, understanding solvent structure at an electrode-electrolyte interface, orientation dependent electrocatalysis etc. Organic and inorganic materials based on nitrides /carbides / layered chalcogenides and polymers are of current interest with respect to energy conversion and storage. The present lecture will discuss some of the developments of interfacial studies involving molecular systems and certain materials
